What to do when your car overheats

Most cars overheat in hot weather and with Summer just around the corner, we thought we’d give you some tips.
The first thing you must do is turn off your air conditioner and roll down the window. Hopefully, that will cool down the engine.  If not, to the chagrin of the driver and passengers, you want to turn the heater and the blower on so it lightens the load on the engine. Try not to ride your brakes but crawl your vehicle through traffic.

If your car is still overheating, pull over and open your hood. Don’t open your radiator cap until the car has completely cooled down. Then, open it and add water. The main reasons that cars overheat are:

  1. The cooling system has a leak
  2. Water and coolant in the radiator are low
  3. The thermostat is broken or malfunctioning
